One of them being installing the latest HD 4xxx driver (for windows 8) from the ATI page, I tried installing using the autoinstaller/.exe-file and by showing the driver destination from device manager, but it wouldn't let me install it neither way.

The display adapter is ATI Radeon HD 4250 which I realize is older. Nothing higher than 1280x1024 is available, even though I had much higher yesterday. Today when I unlocked my screen I found that I had very low resolution compared to yesterday.
